Yoga Camp

One of the most important ways to cultivate a feeling of community among yogis is for them to participate in a yoga retreat, whether it’s for just a weekend or for a week. It’s a privilege and a pleasure to be able to get away from the daily grind and immerse yourself in undistracted yoga practice, preferably in a peaceful, natural setting.
A popular venue for staging yoga retreats of Sydney Yoga Centre and Simply Yoga was out west of Sydney, between Richmond and Kurrajong, a place called Camp Berringa. I wrote about my and others’ experience of visiting Camp Berringa over a 12 yr. period, and here are a couple of photos from those days:

I never thought I would find another site as convivial and lovely as Berringa, but today my hopes were raised when I saw The Falls Forest Retreat at Johns River.
It’s not often that a place calls to you, but this retreat centre is made for yogis. The grounds and facilities are much better than we had at Berringa, not luxurious, but clean and comfortable, and set in their own private valley at the foot of Middle Brother Mountain.
The highlight of our visit to Falls Forest Retreat was getting a private tour of the area by 85 yr. old Dr. Mary White, the creator of this centre, which is designed expressly to conserve Nature and to educate the public about the environment. She must surely be a National Treasure as well as a completely gracious hostess.
Thinking about taking some time out in the country? I am.
