Not a typical holiday destination, but I’m here doing my familial duty – accompanying my sister to her pre-op visit to the orthopedic surgeon.
I don’t mean to be voyeuristic; this is a scary and intensely emotive time for my sister.
But I’m a yoga therapist at heart, I guess. So, I’ve read the xrays with interest. A scoliatic spine unfortunately adds complications to a ruptured disc and disc degeneration. The surgeon’s solution will involve rods, screws, and cutting away laminae – a three hour procedure.
Our bodies wear and tear slowly, slowly over time – a fact of life – but we yogis can make an impact by keeping our spines healthy. Twisting, stretching, toning, inverting, eating well, and resting when needed. Such simple techniques and so powerful when practiced with great regularity.
Is it too late to take up yoga, even with a reinforced spine? You know what I will advise 🙂
