Yoga Suits Her

I’ve been teaching yoga since 1980.  A lot of my identity is tied up with being a yoga teacher.  What does that mean?  What should that mean? On this site I explore my personal journey and provide commentary on the state of yoga in the twenty-first century. I invite you to have a look and see what may be here for you.

Any bookshop, whether online or bricks and mortar, can order copies of Teach Yourself Yoga.  Just ask.  Right now I know these two sites carry the book.

Please send me feedback about the book.  I'd love to hear about any errors or problems with eBooks on various devices.  And please review the book wherever you get it.  Reviews will help more people discover the book.

Remedial Yoga in a Holistic Context

Remedial Yoga in a Holistic Context

In this morning’s yoga class there were six students: one with a pinched neck nerve, one with a strained rotator cuff, one with dodgy knees, one with an arthritic ankle and elbow tendonitis, one with a sore back, and one ‘normal’ (at least for the time being).
In looking at a group ‘remedially’, I saw a collection of ailments. Looking through the holistic lens of yoga, I saw students who are totally fit to practice yoga according to their ability.
For my money, I believe everyone should adapt yoga according to their individual needs and constitution. […]

The Team

So far , I’ve had an expeditious and successful rehabilitation. It will go on for some weeks and months, but I now only have one more full day in rehab before heading to my northerly home.
People have remarked on what a great job I’ve done, but the network of support I’ve had has been phenomenal.
All the staff at the excellent Mater Hospital, for instance, with a special nod to Nurse Fiona of the red eye shift. […]

Home

I’ve been given my “discharge papers” from rehab for Thursday this week. The doc said I’d made excellent progress. I’m elated about going home.
What is so attractive about being there over being here? The grass is always greener, you say? Well, barring any droughts, that probably is true on Mitchells Island (home).
Mitchells Island is a very pretty slice of the midnorth coast comprised of about 50 square miles of rich river delta land. […]

Four Walls

Four Walls

“Four Walls”, if memory serves. Is a Cold Chisel song, maybe spawned from one of the band members who did time?
I’ve been spending time between four walls, one week in hospital, one week here in Rehab, with one more to go.
It’s not like I’m in prison. I’m grateful for the remarkably cheerful staff. All the facilities are clean and my small room is comfortable for my needs. […]

Here are a couple of items you might like:

Because of the coronavirus, I have suspended my classroom teaching for the time being. To help you keep up with your regular practice, we’ve created a 30-minute video. It’s a first time for me, and I plan on doing more so let me know what you think.

Classes and Workshops

I’m currently teaching two weekly classes on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales where I live. I also lead workshops here and in other parts of Australia.

Books, videos, teachers, websites, places to buy really hot yoga clothes (kidding), and generally anything I find that I think others might find useful.

A Bit About Eve

I’ve been teaching since I was 35. I’m now 73. In that time there have been a few changes. Click here if you want to find out a bit about my life.

Media

I know, I know.  Yoga teachers all want to teach remotely.  I’ve been no exception.  Here are some video and audio productions that I’ve made. Not many – it’s something that I alway mean to get around to.

Shop

No, I’m not selling yoga mats or clothing.  I don’t even have a t-shirt… yet.  But from time to time I find myself with something that someone may want.  Have a look, I’m never sure what you’ll find.

Yoga is changing right along with the rest of the world. It began in a world where the teacher was the authority on all things and students could question nothing.  It’s not like that now, but it’s not yet clear what yoga is developing into.  The process of change will require participation and communication.  Please comment on my posts and let me know what you think of what I’m doing.  And, while you’re at it, please share with me some of your experience of yoga. Below are a few comments from previous posts.

“Ah yes the rich tapestry of ageing, sometimes every week there seems to be something new to deal with … and as with a flower it’s petals can’t be forced open early.  Neither can we prevent each flower fading away.”

Peter

“Thank you Eve for your writings, from my aged perspective I can only say that your yoga teachings over these past two years of my life have helped me enormously in coping with the ageing process. I do my best to spread the word and hopefully share your enthusiasm with others.”

Marie

” My music teacher asked me to choose not to be hard on myself. I think when in the moments I can do that it makes a whole lot of space for my expression and being present and awake. It feels like a big part of meeting myself in the mat each day.”
