Decision time: yes or no?

This is the exciting time of year when you might be considering learning something new. Cuban dancing, contract bridge, an on-line undergraduate course…. Or, you may have been thinking about deepening your understanding of a subject about which you are already knowledgeable.

If you are a keen yoga practitioner, you probably have thought about doing a yoga teacher training at one time or another. This year may be exactly the time for you to move this item up to the top of your bucket list.

My friend and colleague, Megan Jones, has summed up why doing a yoga training is such a brilliant idea. I’ll quote her here as I couldn’t have said it better.

Yoga teacher training isn’t just for budding teachers. Doing a training gives you the skills to live your yoga practice. A yoga training helps you ‘join the dots’ so that yoga practice makes more sense to you. Then, if you decide to teach, you can help the practice make more sense for others.

It’s possible that you may want to do the training but not necessarily want to teach. You just want more knowledge so that your own practice expands. Whatever your motivation, I know that once you make the decision and commit, your life will be changed.

My life was changed forever the day I decided to further my understanding of yoga. When I look back now, nearly thirty years on, I can’t imagine my life without this beautiful and healing practice. Initially, I needed a big push from my teacher, as I lacked confidence. She saw something in me that I didn’t. Now, there isn’t a day that I don’t feel grateful to her and to the amazing people whom I have met through this journey. I’ve been able to share with students and other teachers in the most valuable, heartfelt way I know how. And this has increased my ability to grow and share of myself.

If fear of failure is stopping you, don’t let it. Change is inevitable. Undoubtedly, the most exciting and awesome times in your life have come through something changing. A decision you made, someone you met, some shift that moves you in a different direction. Or, perhaps something that shakes you up. And then when you land, you take in the view with fresh eyes.

You weren’t meant to have an ordinary life; if you were, yoga would never have found you. And you would never have found yoga. I am a firm believer that if you really want to know about something teach it. The beautiful part about the yoga teacher’s path is that you learn all the tools for an amazing lifestyle that emphasises health and happiness. A yoga teacher training isn’t without its challenges, but what amazing life never had a challenge?
