Make Every Day Count

Nick
I came across a great post on The Elephant Journal entitled: “Exercise & Opportunity: Why You Should Throw Away Your Bucket List & Stop Wasting Your Life” by Jennifer S. White.
The author reminded me of two things that people of a certain age like me should consider – get plenty of exercise. The Victorian Government Better Health Channel says:

“Only 1 in 10 Australians over 50 exercises enough to gain any cardiovascular benefit. Some estimates suggest that about half of the physical decline associated with old age may be due to lack of physical activity.

I do a daily yoga practice, but I know that’s not enough. Gardening, walking on the beach, working out with weights help give me that little bit more cardio edge.
The other thing the author made me think about is how easy it is for the older population to get into comfortable routines that keep them from having adventures. A bucket list can be just a lame wish list without some urgency about fulfilling it. Here’s the challenge: Do something everyday that you would maybe only consider doing on a holiday or a weekend. Make every day count. You may have to do some planning… perhaps as you nod off to sleep of a night.
In our household of six “Shedders“, it’s seldom boring. We’re all ticking things off our lists and supporting each other in doing it: writing books, making videos, writing songs, building decorative and food gardens, blogging, teaching, supporting our communities, and more.
If you’d like to hear about how we sixty and seventy year olds are doing ageing differently, tune in to the ABC’s Nightlife around 10:15pm Monday July 1 in the segment on Retirement Options.
