A Sutra a Day: III-22 – Final Passage

Have you ever done a 5Rhythms Dance session? I did several of them when I attended the Burning Man festival a couple of years ago.

What is it? A movement practice set to music for the purpose of connecting with one’s body in a profound way: feet-on-the-ground at the same time as surrendering to an organic beat.

The creator of 5Rhythms, Gabrielle Roth, wanted her method to be a spiritual practice whereby participants enjoyed release in their bodies which in turn would encourage the quieting of mental chatter.

Sounds like good yoga practice, doesn’t it?

Gabrielle Roth was a stand for mind-body integration so that people might awake to their spiritual natures. She said, “If you put the psych in motion, it will heal itself.”

This wise and strong woman had her own spiritual practices put to the test when she was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. You can listen to a free interview with Gabrielle Roth called Dancing with Cancer and hear her insights about health and healing. I can’t recommend this recording highly enough.

After a valiant three-year cancer journey, Gabrielle Roth passed away on October 23rd.

Social Media for Yoga

I’ve been in a big learning curve over the last few weeks. I thought I was doing pretty well, up until this point, to have more or less mastered almost-daily posts on “Yoga Suits Her”.

There’s no such thing as sitting back and watching the green beans grow down here on the farm. No sirree! The next thing I have to figure out is Twitter and Facebook.

Moreover I need to do new and different things with links, hashtags, @_, tiny-urls, contractions and more.

Why bother? I can hear some of you say.

Good question. In a matter of days, maybe a little more than a week, I and my small entrepreneurial team are bringing out a new yoga product. Word of mouth is not enough these days to sell our invention. I will have to tweet, seek friends, fans and likers, and make myself known in just 140 characters of humorous and scintillating discussion. However, I must not under any circumstances, I’m well advised, turn into a spam-bot.

I can do this. It will be good for me. It will be good for business. It will develop new neuronal pathways and be fun. It’s a new dawn. Thomas Friedman, author of The World is Flat 3.0, would say I’m part of the global explosion of digital technology that is creating a new age.

I just wish I didn’t have to run so fast to catch up!

Speaking of things technological, here’s Erich Schiffman with a lively podcast for you:

Rolling Stone

Yoga teachers sometimes veer from the straight and narrow (if in fact they have been on it) and I admit to having missed a day of practice. This is especially sad as I have been on the road, between Sydney and Mitchells Island. I’ll pun and say that the road certainly takes its toll on one’s body.

On the other hand, by being stuck in the car for many kilometres, Daniel and I have been able to listen to a good deal of an audiobook called Life by Keith Richards. I didn’t think I would like the book so much because I’ve never been a big fan of The Rolling Stones. However, I’ve changed my mind, thanks to ole Keith. He has introduced me to musical distinctions about blues, country, rock and jazz, and especially about guitar playing.

In his autobiography, as you would expect, he does describe nuances of drug taking gained from many years of experimentation and, quite likely, abuse. On this subject, I’m worse than a greenhorn. But as a result of listening to Life, I’ve come to see Keith more as a musical virtuoso, and as a profound and soulful person.

So, if I may,

I recommend the book to you, even better the audiobook.

Here’s an excerpt of the old master talking about his experience of songwriting:

What is it that makes you want to write songs? To stretch yourself into other people’s hearts? You want to plant yourself there or at least get a resonance where other people become a bigger instrument than the one you are playing. It becomes almost an obsession to touch other people, to write a song that is remembered and taken to heart. It’s a connection, a touching of bases, a thread that runs through all of us – a stab to the heart. Sometimes I think songwriting is about tightening the heart strings as much as possible without bringing on a heart attack.

If you received the previous post by email, you won’t have seen a sound player in the message.  There are still two ways to listen to the recording.  Either click on the title of the post to get to my … Continue reading

Janu Sirsasana

Janu Sirsasana is sometimes called – perhaps somewhat optimistically –  ”head-to-knee” pose. It is a posture that I think of having a split personality, like the ancient Roman deity Janus, with two faces. Part forward bend and part lateral twist, these two movements don’t always want to go together harmoniously and can actually end up competing.

For instance, you really want to go forward over your extended leg, and so you turn slightly to go there,  but one shoulder raises, the other drops, and you find yourself in twisted tension. Remembering that your yoga teacher told you forward bends are meant to be put you in a calm frame of mind.

I’ve done a little audio recording for you which gives a few fine details to help you adjust yourself in Janu Sirsasana. It’s my intention these details make the pose a little more user-friendly.

[EDIT: Unfortunately I needed to delete the audio because the material was based on a book by Donald Moyer and his publisher asked that it be removed. If you're interested you could read the book - Yoga: Awakening the Inner Body. It's the real deal.]
