I’ve had a hard time today getting my writing wheels turning. A few minutes ago I realised that I’d started the day having gotten up on “the wrong side of the bed”, and blamed it on lack of sleep.
Being rather rest deprived, I pulled in some more evidence that it was a Bad Day because it happened to be rainy. I had plans that involved being out-of-doors and the showers were wrecking my program.
Next, I noticed a few cold symptoms sort of skulking around the edges of my peripheral vision: difficulty in swallowing, a few sneezes, a tickle of a cold sore…. Not good!
Finally, I spilled a full cup of milky tea on my desk. That could have nailed the argument for writing off the day and definitely not writing a post. But, no; I actually listened to myself whinging and made a conscious choice to rewrite the script for the rest of the day.
This is the heart of yoga practice:
Yoga citta vritti nirodhah
Yoga is the ability to direct the mind exclusively toward an object and sustain that direction without any distractions. – T. K. V. Desikachar (from The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Yoga Practice)
